Shops
Corner Shops
The only shops actually in Weoley Hill are the few shops near the Post Office and Northfield Manor School in Swarthmore Road and Tugford Road. There are a few in Shenley Green near St David’s church and the doctors surgery. There is a small row of shops at the roundabout at the end of Middle Park Road.(with an off licence as it is outside BVT).
Shopping Centres
Weoley Castle surrounds a large grass roundabout with new parking bays built into the roundabout. It is a useful local centre with a smallish Somerfield supermarket, a bakery, a household items shop, an indoor market, several chemists, butchers and greengrocers, two travel agents, a pet shop, card shops, several charity shops and Asian restaurants. It has a library, a Lloyds bank and a post office.
Selly Oak/Bournbrook is an odd centre with Sainsburys and its car park surrounded by the roads that comprise ‘Selly Oak triangle’. Opposite Sainsburys blank wall is a range of specialist shops such as beds, carpets, disability equipment, juggling supplies, a barber etc. Nearer to the site of the original oak tree at the Oak Tree Road junction there are a butcher, a chemist, estate agents, an antique shop, a bakery, a post office, Lloyds Bank, Blockbuster, card shops and newsagents, an Italian restaurant....... On the far side of Sainsburys are Homebase, PCWorld, Currys, Comet and Halfords on the Battery Park estate and B and Q on an adjacent site. The library is at the top end of Bournbrook. Most of the Bournbrook shops are aimed at students; it has a large number of Asian restaurants but it still has one or two of its original shops including an old fashioned ironmonger/tool shop.
Northfield is a traditional straggling high street with a shopping centre at one end and a new large Sainsburys at the other end. It has a post office and multiples such as Iceland, Farm Foods, Boots, Woolworths, Burtons, Wilkensons and Peacocks. It has a wide range of other shops, for the most part selling at bargain prices. It is hoping to go more upmarket when the by-pass is completed.
Harborne is another straggling High Street shopping centre which is favoured by many residents despite being further away. Slightly more upmarket than Northfield, and with fewer multiples, it has an M&S food shop, its shoe shop sells the better brands of shoes and its Oxfam shop is a second hand bookshop.
