Bournville and the Bournville Village Trust
There are other websites that give the history of the Cadbury family, the chocolate factory and the creation of the social housing that developed into the larger estate now controlled by the Bournville Village Trust. This site is more concerned with Bournville today. What it is like to live here. How the residents can get together in various ways, and how they interact with the Trust. There is already a residents’ community website that covers the whole Bournville Estate; this site does not wish to duplicate its work. It contains a great deal of interest, including recent newspaper items, and we recommend you browse through it. http://www.bournville.org.uk You may also wish to browse http://www.weoleycastle.net/ for other local information.
The Trust
The Bournville Village Trust was set up to separate the management of the estate from the family business of chocolate manufacture. It is now completely separate from Cadbury-Schweppes. It has developments in Telford, Bordesley Green etc, and some agricultural land as well as the Bournville estate.
BVT is a charity, controlled by 12 Trustees most of whom are related to George Cadbury or his brother Richard. The Trustees determine all matters of policy and that is implemented by paid officers, led by a Chief Executive. The trustees meet five times a year.
The main office is in Oak Tree Lane, Bournville with branch offices elsewhere.
There are three committees which include residents representatives; the Estate Management and Scheme Management, the Housing Services Committee and an overall consultative body called the Bournville Advisory Committee.
Amongst other things the Scheme committee sees brief details of all planning applications and can make recommendations to the trustees on the decisions. The trustees normally accept the recommendations of the paid officers as to which applications are within current guidelines; they discuss those applications that are not clearly within the current policy or where a change of policy seems desirable.
The Housing Services Committee is concerned with BVT tenant’s properties.
